What Unity adds to a Square set-up

These are features of Unity. Square may offer some of them through other products, such as Square Marketing, so compare the whole package you would pay for.

Automatic cashback tiers

Customers move to a higher cashback rate as their spend grows, and the wallet card changes to show the new tier.

Two-sided referrals

The member who invites a friend earns on that friend’s purchases, and the new member gets a welcome reward.

Staff incentives

Every team member has a personal QR code for sign-ups and can earn bonuses, so you can see who grows the programme.

Behaviour-based segments

Target by days since last visit, spend, tier, referrals or location, and send push, SMS or email.

Geo push

A location message on the wallet card that Apple Wallet can show when a member is nearby.

When Square Loyalty is the better fit

  • You want the simplest possible set-up inside Square, with nothing extra for staff to open at the till.
  • You run a single location with a low number of loyalty visits, where Square’s lowest tier costs less than a Unity plan.
  • A visit-based or item-based reward, such as “buy 9 coffees, get the 10th free”, is all you need.
  • You also sell through Square Online and want one native loyalty programme across those channels.

When Unity is the better fit

  • You want cashback tiers, referrals and staff incentives in one programme.
  • You plan to message members regularly with push, SMS and email to targeted segments.
  • You have high visit volumes, where per-visit pricing tiers would rise, or several locations to manage centrally.
  • Some of your locations or staff don’t use Square, and you want one programme across every till.

Working out the cost for your business

Square charges per location by loyalty visits; Unity charges per business plan. A single café with around 1,000 loyalty visits a month would be in Square’s £45 tier, compared with £49 for Unity Start or £89 for Grow. With three locations, Square’s price is multiplied by three, while Unity Scale would be £89 + £60 = £149 a month. Your own numbers will differ, and the value of the rewards you give back usually matters more than the subscription.
