Customer notification system
Customer notifications that bring people back
Reach loyalty members on the channel that suits the message: a push notification on their wallet card, an SMS or an email. Choose the audience by real behaviour, schedule the send and see who came back.
Three channels, one customer list
Every member who joins your loyalty programme becomes part of one customer base you can message, subject to their marketing preferences.
Wallet push notifications
Messages appear on the loyalty card in the customer’s wallet. There is no app to download, and the card is already on their phone.
SMS campaigns
Short, time-sensitive offers by text message, such as a quiet-afternoon deal or a last-day reminder. Available on Grow and Scale.
Email campaigns
Longer messages built from email templates: new menus, seasonal collections or event invitations. Available on Grow and Scale.
Automatic notifications on the wallet card
Some messages send themselves. When a customer with a wallet card earns or redeems points, Unity updates the card and notifies them of the change. When their spend moves them into a higher cashback tier, they get a congratulations message with their new rate.
With geo push, you add a short message to each location. Apple Wallet can show it on the lock screen when a member is near that location, for example “Show your card today for double points”. The phone decides when to display location messages, so treat geo push as a gentle reminder rather than a guaranteed alert.
Target by behaviour, not guesswork
Build audience segments from rules and combine them with AND / OR logic. Segments update as customers buy, so a campaign always reaches the people who match today.
| Rule group | Examples |
|---|---|
| Spending | Total spend, average check and number of transactions over a period |
| Visits | Visit frequency and days since the last visit |
| Loyalty | Customer tier and points balance |
| Referrals | Number of friends invited, or whether the customer joined by referral |
| Locations | A specific location visited, or the customer’s main location |
| Customer details | Age, gender, registration date, account age and active status |
| Wallet | Whether the customer has the digital card on their phone |
Typical segments: customers who haven’t visited in 30 days, members one step away from the next tier, people who joined by referral, or regulars at one location. Our guide to customer segmentation for small businesses suggests eight to start with.
How a campaign works
Create the promotion
Give it a start and end date and describe the offer.
Pick the audience
Choose one or more segments, or send to all members.
Add delivery methods
Add push, SMS and email messages, each with its own scheduled time within the promotion period.
Review the results
See channel usage in the promotion details and compare repeat visits with your baseline in analytics.
Which channel when?
| Channel | Best for | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Wallet push | Balance updates, nearby reminders, short offers | Keep it short; only members with the card on their phone receive it |
| SMS | Urgent, time-limited offers | Highest attention, so send sparingly and only with marketing consent |
| Stories, menus, events, longer offers | Slower to be read; strong subject lines matter |

Messaging customers lawfully in the UK
Joining a loyalty programme and agreeing to marketing are separate choices. UK rules on electronic marketing (PECR, alongside UK GDPR) cover marketing texts and emails, so collect clear consent, or rely on the soft opt-in only where it genuinely applies, and include an easy way to opt out in every message. Our guide to loyalty programmes, UK GDPR and PECR explains the basics. It is general information, not legal advice. Check the ICO’s direct marketing guidance for your situation.

Notification questions
Do customers need to install an app?
No. Push notifications go to the digital loyalty card saved in their phone’s wallet. Customers join by scanning your QR code.
Can I schedule messages in advance?
Yes. Each delivery method in a promotion has its own scheduled time, so you can plan a launch message and a reminder in one go.
Can I send different messages to different locations?
Yes. Segments can target customers who visited a specific location, and each location has its own geo push message.
